Project Description

WHAT ARE YOU DOING AFTER WORK? A PRE-RETIREMENT PLANNING WORKSHOP

Often times the retirement experience turns out to be different from what we originally anticipated it to be. Once the honeymoon phase abates, and the initial feelings of freedom and excitement wear off, many people start to feel bored, empty, and disconnected. In North America retirement planning has been equated with financial planning. Countless commercials, institutions and books doll out much needed advice about financial planning for retirement.

If you are lucky enough to land a job in an organization that matches RRSP or 401K contributions, then you may have given some thought to how much money you are going to need when you exit the workforce. Bravo! Retirement planning however, demands so much more than the accumulation of a large enough nest- egg to fund your desired retirement lifestyle. A successful and happy retirement requires vision, preparation, commitment, creativity and courage. It requires that we ask ourselves, “What’s next?” long before we exit the workforce. Besides how do you know how much money you will need to fund your retirement if you do not know what you want to do with your life in retirement???? When people have a better understanding of the challenges they face as new retirees, they are better equipped to navigate the retirement transition and determine whether or not they should in fact retire. Additionally, research indicates that people who are emotionally prepared for retirement are far more satisfied with their lives once retired in comparison to those who have not thought about this next phase of development.
